Petrochemicals

Petrochemicals are chemicals derived from petroleum or natural gas. They are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of a wide range of products, including plastics, detergents, and pharmaceuticals. Adsorbents are commonly used in petrochemicals manufacturing to remove impurities such as water or sulfur in order to produce high-quality products

For instance ethylene dehydration is a challenging task as the regeneration of molecular sieve with such a reactive feed, if not properly controlled, can lead to oligomerization and a drop of the bed efficiency. Several steps are then implemented during the regeneration sequence to minimize this issue and specific molecular sieves with a minimized surface reactivity are used.

Medical

Adsorbents are widely used in the medical sector to remove toxic substances from the organism and in life support apparatus.

For instance, activated carbons are used for the elimination of low molecular weight organic substances from the body and in gas masks cartridges to remove harmful components from air.

Oxygen concentrators are based on a Pressure Swing Adsorption process where ambient air is purified through an adsorbent bed by selectively removing nitrogen to obtain an oxygen-enriched product gas stream.

Semi-conductors

Semi-conductors are materials with unique electrical properties that are used in the manufacturing of electronic devices, including computers, smartphones, and solar panels. Adsorbents, such as activated carbon and molecular sieves, are essential for maintaining a safe working environment in the semiconductor industry.

For instance, the Etching, Cleaning, and Deposition processes used to create these devices require the use of special gases that may contain toxic components, including CF4, CHF3, ClF2, F2, Cl2, and HF. To ensure the safety of the working environment, these gases must be properly treated after use. Fixed bed adsorbers are used to remove these harmful components making the gases safer for disposal or reuse.

Food processing

Food safety is a prevalent concern, and the detection and removal of hazardous substances is required at every step of the manufacturing process. Food packaging plays a crucial role in protecting the products from contaminants and moisture during storage and transport. For instance, gases like ethylene naturally generated, are detrimental to products’ shelf-life as they induce tissues alteration, and accelerate aging and ripening of fresh products

Conventional packaging materials have become obsolete since they use raw materials contributing to pollution. Novel adsorbents like MOFs and MOF-based materials are more environmentally friendly and their incorporation in packaging materials has increased due to their high ethylene capacity, water and oxygen scavenger ability but also antimicrobial properties.
